Every night we, Tennysons, have a family tradition... our Bible story (devotional) time together. We first get our jammies on and then we sit down for our family time by opening up Eli's "Kids quest" Bible. This night we read about "What should you do if someone lies to you?" Galations 6:1... "Brothers and sisters, what if someone is caught in a sin? Then you who are guided by the Spirit should correct that person. Do it in a gentle way. But be careful. You could be tempted too."
We found this to be a great lesson. This is something that Eli is going to run into a whole lot more now that he is in 2nd grade and getting older. Many kids grow up in homes where little "white" lies are ok. They are not, because that allows a child's mind to think that if this little lie is ok, then the next one that is a little bit bigger is ok too... because it's not BIG! Where do you draw the line? Well my thoughts on that are to draw the line at lying... ANY lying is wrong. Yes, our son is not perfect... yes we have caught him in a lie... but by teaching him that it is wrong at such a young age will set him up for success as he grows into a young man, and eventually a grown man. These foundational truths are so important in a world where right and wrong is now so gray... there is no right and wrong... it's all what your perception is on the matter... what is right for you could be wrong for someone else.
So... this is how the kids question answered "what should you do if someone lies to you?"
"Be a champion for the truth. Be a boy or girl who stands up for what is true. How you respond to a lie depends on who it effects. If a friend lies when she tells you she made 20 free throws in a row playing basketball, you don't have to make a big deal of that... But if someone rells you a bunch of lies about another kid at school, you need to tell the person who is lying that what he or she is saying is not true. And you must NOT pass the lies on to anyone else. This is important because otherwise the lies will spread and make things worse for the person who is being lied about. Remember, stick up for the truth, and when you tell others that lying is wrong, be sure to do it in a kind manner.
